    Traffic Calming

    In the Third Ward, especially along Kalamazoo Avenue, hundreds of people are calling for traffic calming to reduce reckless driving and speeding traffic. Residents have shared stories of property damage, injury and even pedestrian death due to reckless driving. Calming traffic here will make it safer for residents as well as those accessing services in the area.

    We are working to:

    Find local government funding for the installation of flashing crosswalks and a traffic light
    Ensure crossing guards for school children in the area
    Build relationships with city staff
    Raise awareness of the low investment in the Third Ward

    These changes will create a safer neighborhood for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers in the area, along with residents who want to enjoy their outdoor spaces without fear of dangerous traffic.

    Our work has led to:

    • A strong team of neighborhood leaders
    • Direct contact with city staff and decision makers leading to working relationships
    • Knowledge of public money and funding possibilities

    We encourage you to share your perspective and join us in this critical work. We meet in person as needed, but in between meetings are doing advocacy work with local governments and city staff.

    Initiatives

    The projects that Together West Michigan teams work on reflect issues identified in community listening sessions that take place throughout the year.

    At times, new projects also spring out of challenges uncovered during existing work. Initiatives are not static. They change or shift as new issues are identified, as new leaders come forward, and as new teams are formed around the work.

    Immigration

    Together West Michigan has been building its advocacy capacity, calling for critical policy changes to protect our immigrant neighbors. The letter below was sent to our local and federal legislators, summarizing our actions to date.

    This video
    highlights the January 19 MLK Day event that launched this initiative. Together West Michigan continues to meet monthly with these multi-faith groups to push for change together.

    Other immigration advancements made so far:

    • Congolese refugees can now take the written driving test in Swahili;
    • Many more people understand why immigrants have come, have left their homes, what they face here, and potential pathways forward that strengthen our communities for everyone;
    • Five local police departments have made clear that their work is community safety for all, and not carrying out immigration enforcement;
    • Mental health education and support sessions have been held with dozens of New Americans.

    We encourage you to share your perspective and join us in this critical work. We meet in person as needed, but in between meetings are doing advocacy work with local governments and city staff.

    Is TWM affiliated with a political party?

    A:

    No. TWM is non-partisan, meaning that we work with anyone aligned with us on a particular issue, and that can change issue by issue, and over time. We like to say we have no permanent allies, and no permanent opponents. We will not endorse or oppose a political party or candidate for office.
